ADRIAN VANDENBERG On Working With DAVID COVERDALE Again: 'We Always Have The Feeling That Sooner Or Later We Might Do Something Together'

Holland's FaceCulture recently conducted an interview with former WHITESNAKE and VANDENBERG guitarist Adrian Vandenberg about his VANDENBERG'S MOONKINGS band. You can watch the entire chat below. A few excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On the new VANDENBERG'S MOONKINGS album, "MK II":

Adrian: "It's going to sound like a cliché, every time when I make an album, which is probably [what] every band or artist tries to do, you want to make the best album you can possibly make in a certain moment in time. Right now, I'm still convinced, I've heard it a few thousand times now, this album, because the writing phase and the demo phase, recording phase, the mixing phase, I must of heard it five thousand times, easy. Fortunately, I still think this is the best album I've been involved with this far, which is logical, because you try to make your best album, whether it proves to be your best album, I'll be able to tell you in about three years or something."

On whether he still has the same passion for music compared to when he was starting out:

Adrian: "Definitely. It's probably worse, or more intense because your life moves on and I realize each day that I'm very fortunate to still be able to make the kind of blues rock that's totally related with the first TEASER album when I was twenty-one. I wouldn't have expected it. I never took anything for granted because I was expecting to be a teacher in painting and artistry, which I studied for. For that reason, I never had to do any concessions as far as the kind of music I looked at as being a hobby, but the hobby became my living, which is something I realize every day. I never take it for granted. I think 'Man, I'm a lucky bastard.' I still do it."

On whether he stays in touch with WHITESNAKE frontman David Coverdale:

Adrian: "We always keep in touch. We always have the feeling that sooner or later we might do something together whether it's a blues record or acoustic-something, so, sooner or later, it could happen. We'll see. We'll see where it goes. No specific plans. We're both involved in what we do. David is still going on with WHITESNAKE and I've got MOONKINGS and we really enjoy what we're doing. So you don't really make plans for anything else. You don't really have the time for it either."

On his penchant for writing ballads:

Adrian: "I just love a good rock ballad. I love listening to them. There's been quite a number of great rock ballads and I like the difference in the dynamics. For instance, on none of the records that I've been involved with this far, the difference between has been this big. On [new MOONKINGS song] 'Walk Away', the only electric instrument on there is the solo on it. The rest is all acoustic. I don't think I've ever done it before. Actually, I did. On the last album, there was 'Out Of Reach', it was all acoustic as well. But, the rock ballads in VANDENBERG and WHITESNAKE, it was in the choruses and big acoustic guitars over big electric guitars. I like the dynamic difference of light and shade. Like, really big loud, powerful songs, then suddenly break it down to the very basics, have real violins on it and stuff. Now, I've been writing ballads. Writing a ballad comes really easy to me, usually. When I sit behind a piano or when I have an acoustic guitar in my lap. I read an interview with Elton John once. Not that I in the furthest distances could compare myself to anything like Elton John. He's amazing. He described it, he said he found it so much easier to write a ballad than to write a good rock song. I've something similar. I don't find it difficult to write a good rock song because that's what I do. But ballads come to me a little easier than a rock song because there's also different parameters that you force upon yourself, at least with what I do. When I write a ballad for instance, this band, or VANDENBERG or WHITESNAKE, it has to have a rock element in it. Otherwise, it would sound like Justin Bieber trying to do a rock ballad and we don't want that. With 'Walk Away' the element is the drums and especially, Jan's [Hoving] vocals. Halfway through the song, he becomes really powerful. In the beginning, it could have been a singer/songwriter kind of ballad. So I really like the dynamic difference. I pick up an acoustic guitar and I very rarely write a rock riff on it. Usually, I start finger picking, then before I realize it, I have the intro or verse for a ballad-type of song."

VANDENBERG'S MOONKINGS sophomore album, "MK II", was released on November 3 via the Mascot Label Group.
